Future Generation Art Prize Exhibition

Venice Biennale, Palazzo Ca’ Tron

May 11 - August 18, 2019

RE-ANIMATED at the 2019 Venice Biennale. As part of the Future Generation Art Prize exhibition, my work will be exhibited at the Palazzo Ca’ Tron, a Venetian Renaissance palace.

RE-ANIMATED is a virtual reality and video installation that brings back to life the extinct Kauai’O’o song bird from the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The new installation will merge a digital replica of Kauai with the architecture of the exhibition space, uniting the worlds of RE-ANIMATED and the Palazzo Ca'Tron.

Entering a new landscape framed by two monolithic video screens and mulch-covered floors, viewers will immerse themselves in RE-ANIMATED's environment composed of 3D scanned flora and fauna, lichen, rocks and feathers that I have transformed into new, boundary-breaking organic constellations. Hidden microphones connect the breath and voice of the audience to effects in the virtual landscape, and algorithmic, ever-evolving music by collaborator Michael Rieseman completes the world.

RE-ANIMATED is based on conversations I had with ornithologist Dr. Douglas H. Pratt about Hawaii's extinct Kauai'O'o song bird, and the exhibition in Venice is a new opportunity to examine our impact on the natural world, and speculate on our collective futures.

This installation is produced by the PinchukArtCentre, as part of the Future Generation Art Prize, a biannual award organized by the PinchukArtCentre and the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.

RE-ANIMATED was made with support from Bikuben Foundation, The Danish Arts Council, Harvestworks, Mana Contemporary, The American Museum of Natural History, and the Cornell Department of Ornithology.

To request a time to view the work in Venice during the opening days May 9-10, or for additional information about the piece, please email: info.erraticanimist@gmail.com https://vimeo.com/309937275
