EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

Educational outreach is an integral part of Hyphen Hub’s mission. Each partnership we build is customized to meet the needs of the school or organization we work with and aims to provide students, teachers, and communities with direct hands-on TechArt experiences through personal interaction with our artists. Participants have the opportunity to experience a class, lecture, lecture-demonstration, or workshop with a Hyphen Hub artist community member. Students (high school or college) are able to explore art and emerging technology with some of the world’s leading innovators, designers, engineers, and technologists. Below are examples of the most popular topics, all of which use art as a means of inquiry:

  • ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

  • AUGMENTED REALITY

  • FASHIONTECH

  • ROBOTICS

  • VIRTUAL REALITY

Examples of programs we’ve organized:

FashionTech in New York City Public Schools. Building on the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programming offered in New York’s public schools, Hyphen Hub organized a FashionTech discussion for high school students about the technology underpinning this emerging field, including artificial intelligence and robotics. Led by world-renowned Dutch innovator and designer Anouk Wipprecht, students also learned about the latest changes within the fashion industry including the use of 3-D printing.

STEAM Outreach in Panama City, Panama: As part of the “STRATA, Rocks, Dust, Stars” exhibition organized by Panama’s Ministry of Culture and Open Arts (a Panama-based arts incubator), and held at MAC (Contemporary Museum of Art), Hyphen Hub organized a series of educational programs for Panama City’s local school population and to docents of those schools in order to introduce them to, and develop their interest in, the DIY culture (“Do It Yourself”), the Maker Community, and STEAM efforts programs.

University Workshops in Manizales, Colombia: At the International Festival of the Image 2018 held at the Universidad de Caldas in Manizales, Colombia, Hyphen Hub organized a series of discussions for faculty and students with artists at the forefront of art and technology who addressed a range of pressing issues including the future of work, new trends in film and theater production, and the merging of video gaming, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality.
