In this Hyphen Hub Salon, we took a jump into the wonderful and strange, exploring new ways of creating and experiencing multimedia opera and sound sculpture.

Margaret Schedel and Weiwei Jin are two leading composers/multimedia artists who showed a work-in-progress about a singer-less opera - "The Self" - that takes the psychoactive drug Ayahuasca as a dominant thread. In a unique glimpse into this multimedia installation opera, we listened to the sonification of rat brain scan data, also explored how Schedel Jin are animating paintings and the audience saw how they are creating interactive lighting through gestural control.

 

Terry Dame is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and unique instrument creator who performs on her original sensor-driven controller instruments: The Horn of Plenty Sounds and The Parisian Hammer. Fabricated from mainly recycled objects, these wonderful interactive sound sculptures utilize light, motion, proximity and force sensors to trigger custom-made samples. For the Salon, Dame created for us an interactive improvisation on her unusual instruments involving herself and the environmental elements of our iconic venue.

 

This Salon was the first of many events created in partnership with Harvestworks to present works created in their TEAM (Technology, Engineering, Art and Music) Lab.
